Muddy volcanoes, Berca, RomaniaThe Muddy Volcanoes of Romania are situate near Buzau, close to the village of Berca (12 km).
They create a geological reserve spreading over almost 30 hectares. The area has been declared natural reserve in 1924. Similar formations can be found only in Siberia, Australia Trinidad Island in the Carribean. There are about 1100 similar formation throughout the world, some of them heigher, such as those from Norway.
From a geological point of view, their genesis consists of gases under pressure carrying mud and water toward the surface. The forms generated are some miniature "volcanoes", mud cones of about 5-6 meters in height.
The landscape has a moon-like appearance, barren land without any vegetation, long "tongues" of mud criss-crossing the area all over.
Depending on your interest, visiting the entire area might take anything between 1 and 3 hours.
Please be aware that accomodation in the area is totally inexistent, therefore you might want to book it somewhere else.
